Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) is the nation's largest children's literacy nonprofit. Since 1966, it has worked toward a nation of lifelong readers by inspiring the joy of reading in children, a critical element in creating skilled readers.
Books kids choose, and keep
Kids who enjoy reading read more, and kids who read more become skilled readers. RIF starts there. Through its flagship Books for Ownership program, children pick new books that match their interests and take them home to keep, often the first books they have ever owned.
RIF pairs those books with free resources for teachers and families, including Literacy Central and the Skybrary digital library. It works through schools, community partners, and volunteers in all 50 states.
